Turandot - oil/canvas, 1999
Inspired by Puccini's opera of the same name. The Chinese princess Turandot is wooed by princes from many countries, but she won't be the wife of anyone who cannot solve the three riddles that she poses. And anyone who tries and fails, will be beheaded. Young prince Kalaf, made homeless by an enemy who invaded his country, first sets eye on the beautiful princess as she commands the execution of her latest suitor, at moonrise. It's a particularly impressive scene in the opera, and on first hearing it, I instantly knew that I wanted to paint it.
